I'm not a muscle car guy. I'm far too over privileged, liberal, and unpatriotic to be the traditional target demo for the muscle car. Nor am I an exec of a large firm who still thinks he can stick it to The Man. But I do know bullshit when I see it.

Muscle cars were meant to have a big engine with plenty of get-up-and-go, but the fun was working on them to make them faster. A 700HP Challenger should be the properly ridiculous-looking dreamchild of some blue-collar All-American teen with too much mechanical know how and too little common sense. Not some Viagra-and-testosterone Q ship. Bone stock, it loses all the coolness it would have had if it were modded.

I hoped you warmed up before you wrote that. You wouldn't want to hurt yourself streeetching that far to find something not to like about the Hellcat.

Nope, muscle cars have always had lots of power (well... most of the time) and always will (I hope). And no matter how much power they make stock, people will still be trying to make them faster. 9 second streetable Hellcats aren't far off, and that's full cage drag car territory.

You assume that these can't be modified when they likely can. Plus 700hp now is what >400hp must've been like in the mid to late 60s.

Well, it wasn't necessarily my choice (sort of an early present b/c my 5 had an unfortunate rendez-vous with a concrete floor). I do a little app coding as a hobby.

That's what the Hellcat should've been: A blend of some psycho's mechanical skills and glorious disregard of everything else that shocks the hell outta everyone because they don't expect it to be THAT fast.

Also, since when are privileged liberal people not allowed to like muscle cars? One of the things I've always enjoyed about this hobby is that, barring some obnoxious individuals, people can agree across class lines that certain things are just cool.

I thought what made muscle cars awesome was that you could buy a turn-key monster right off the showroom floor, with a warranty.

There is no question that some of these will be modified heavily. At the most basic level all you need to do is engineer out some durability and reliability for power. Especially on a supercharged engine. Pulley swap and tune are probably the first Day 2 mods that are done.

And as a muscle car guy I'm not sure if I should be insulted at the stereotyping or not.

I dunno why, but to me muscle-cars have always been associated with Joe American and wrapped up in ideologies. Around here, the only people who buy these are either businessmen trying to be hip or Ed Hardy j-bro wannabe Southerners (usually the children of said businessmen), which I guess spoiled my perception of these cars.

While I am also a liberal, and all those other things that you listed, I disagree.

Back in the day, you could actually work on your own car. These days, that is quite a bit harder. (Un)Fortunately, a whole industry has sprung up to put obscene power in your car and all you need is a VISA.

People with more dollars than brains build 220mph Camaros. CAMAROS! Have you seen the aero on those things? It takes no talent to make unnecessary HP anymore. Just dollars.

What Hellcat has done is saved you the trouble of searching for a tuner and offered you a warranty.

Who cares about what they are associated with? Cars should be evaluated in terms of how their attributes relate to what an individual values in a car. If someone likes power, burnouts, whatever else the hellcat does, it shouldn't matter. Although I guess if someone likes prejudicial snap judgments of others and defining themselves through consumption then I suppose a car's associations would come into play.

If this is your idea of a QShip...what's your idea of stylish? :) The thing about it is I'm 42...actually I'm 13 in a 42 year old body. I've driven the originals and I'm SO THANKFUL the Horsepower gods have smiled upon us and given us at least one more round of excess. I'm believe these forms will come in and out of style...much like haircuts or clothing.

The "psshh 700? get ma tools, I can squeeze 300 more outta this" mentality is plenty alive. Also, the "Hellcat is fast, but I bet my *insert 20 something year old's car* can beat that thing" spirit exists as well.

Trust me, there are pleeeenty of cars out in the street that can smoke a Hellcat. The more vanity it gains, the bigger the bullseye on its trunk gets.

I understand and agree on what you are trying to say. What's the fun of having that if you pull up to the drag strip only to be next to another one. You don't "that" feeling of having a 450hp car turned up to 700hp so you beat just about everything that lines up next to you.

To me the only thing that appeals about the Hellcat is the fact that you get a full factory warranty.

Really I prefer the 38K 485hp Scat pack Challenger. Nobody in their right mind needs 700hp. 485hp is PLENTY and I get to stick the 20+ thousand dollar difference in my pocket.
